HYBRIT – fossil free steel

HYBRIT (Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology) is a joint effort by LKAB, SSAB and Vattenfall that represents a paradigm shift for steel production by reducing CO2 emissions by more than 98%. This is achieved by replacing coal-fired blast furnaces with the HYBRIT technology for hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore. The technology is developed in a pilot plant in Luleå, Sweden.

In April 2022 it was announced that the Hybrit Demonstration project will receive 143 MEUR from EU through the Innovation Fund to demonstrate a commercial scale value chain for hydrogen based fossil free steel. The project includes production capacity of 1,2 million tonnes of crude steel, 500 MW electrolyser capacity for hydrogen production and an electric arc furnace.
